In August of 2017 a survey was conducted in which 154 protestant churches in Hanoi were contacted through the Love in Action Committee concerning their community service activities. This is a 72% response rate of the 214 churches registered with the Love Hanoi Festival office. To our knowledge this is the first survey of this scale which has been done regarding the service projects of the churches. Churches and congregations from all denominations and varying sizes were represented but despite these differences, it was found that most churches are actively serving in some way.

Of the 154 churches, 71% (109 churches) reported that they had performed some project or act of service in their local community over the past year. The most common community services were projects which served the poor and projects that served drug addicts in the city, with 41 reported projects for each category. Other ways that churches served their communities included teaching English (11), serving orphans and the disabled (37), providing scholarships to students (5), blood drives (11), and cleaning local neighborhoods and parks (17)

From the collected survey data, the combined efforts of the reported projects showed that over 7,500 people in Hanoi had been helped in the past year. This being 72% of the total of 214 churches, it is safe to assume that over 10,000 people have been helped by the protestant churches in Hanoi city this past year. Most projects (52%) are being done either daily, weekly, or monthly, showing that the churches recognize the importance of providing continued care to the people who they are seeking to serve.

Of the churches which had indicated that they were not currently serving in some way, 87% of these churches (39 of 45) stated that they are interested in joining one of the Love in Action Projects. This demonstrates that the overwhelming majority have a desire to help their communities and see community service as a positive role of the church in society. Of all respondents, 83% (128 of 154) reported that they were interested in receiving training for how to further increase the capacity of their ability to serve Hanoi.

This survey demonstrates that the churches are already contributing greatly to the good of the city and desire to do even more in the future. It is the hope of the Love in Action Committee to promote and multiply these works of service through this booklet and project campaigns.

“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.
